Game Development Update 027 - New Background

Mark Marianelli

I've been getting very bored with looking at the same background over and over again while I work on this game, so it was time to create a new one. Luckily for me, I've designed all the backgrounds in the past - the only snag is recreating those backgrounds as pixel art. This little device has been a dream come true. Actually being able to draw directly onto the pixel platform like a pen and paper is a game changer for me. While nothing will ever look as good as something hand-drawn (humble opinion, of course), this at least gets me pretty close to the real thing within the confines of a retro, pixel-based canvas. Check it out:

Because I'm just acknowledging this game as a complete Mortal Kombat rip-off, I'll just go ahead and say this stage was kind of my homage to the Wastelands stage from MK2. Obviously not the same thing at all, but visually similar.

Here's what the hand-drawn version looked like from however many years ago that was now - there's some obvious differences, but it's pretty true to it I think.

So there you have it. New stage. Once I'm finished with Gazael's busy-work, I'll try and have a playable Demo up in the near future - fingers crossed!
